Build, don't just review

What if accountants shifted from merely explaining the past to engineering systems that anticipate it?

The greatest risk in finance and AI isn’t simply a miscalculation, it’s a profession hesitant to reinvent itself.

This transformation isn’t about achieving a quicker close or creating a more appealing dashboard, but about redefining the role to focus on building rather than just reviewing. It means integrating controls into workflows instead of identifying errors weeks later during reconciliations.

Many teams fall into the trap of purchasing AI to expedite outdated processes. They end up with the same monthly reports and variance commentary, just produced faster. However, accelerating a flawed process only leads to reaching incorrect conclusions sooner. The report itself was never the objective, the real goal is informed decision making, which often occurs before the report is even generated.

The fear of errors, security issues, and unfamiliar tools in auditing is valid. Yet, the phrase “I might break something” has quietly become one of the most costly liabilities in finance.

AI won’t eliminate traditional accountants, rather, those who resist adapting will find themselves replaced by individuals who possess a blend of accounting knowledge and a strong curiosity. Those who can become the finance engineers that organizations truly need.

This new role demands a fresh skill set: less time spent on reviews and more on building. Embracing APIs, automation, and the discernment to identify which processes require redesign instead of mere fixes is essential.
